Online STEM OPT Hub and Resources on DHS Final Rule

Latest News

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) released a STEM OPT hub on the Study in the States website, to help school officials, students, and employers understand the new DHS final rule on OPT for F-1 students. The website includes a transition plan and training plan, as well as FAQs.The Transition Plan section outlines what international students can expect during the next few months and highlights two categories of eligible F-1 students: Students with STEM OPT Applications Pending on May 10, 2016 and Students with Existing 17 Month STEM OPT EADs on May 10, 2016.

For Employers, the new provision in the STEM OPT rule allows DHS to perform site visits to employer locations that train STEM OPT students and requires employers to comply with certain reporting requirements to assist DHS in tracking the STEM OPT students and their practical training progress.

The rule was posted to the Federal Register Wednesday, March 9, 2016, for public inspection and will go into effect Tuesday, May 10, 2016. Become familiar with the new rule and start implementing an action plan to comply with the new requirements!
