287(g) Agreements to be Reviewed

On March 4, 2009, at 2 pm EST, Congress will hold a hearing available by webcast to review 287(g) agreements between federal and local law enforcement officials. The 287(g) provision generally allows local authorities to form agreements with federal officials to identify and apprehend undocumented immigrants. It has been a been hotly contested issue. New Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has also ordered a review of the program citing financial contraints on local authorities.
